Dyson® is reinforcing their commitment to professional hairstylists with the launch of the Supersonic r™. The brand new blowdryer is 30 percent smaller, 20 percent lighter and easier to maneuver than the already super lightweight, OG Supersonic™—saving the wrists and shoulders of busy hairstylists everywhere.

Being tasked with creating the smallest hairdryer on the market was no easy feat—here’s a look at how Dyson engineers accepted the challenge.

How Supersonic r™’s design benefits busy stylists (and their clients):

The new dryer has been years in the making—since 2017 the brand has surveyed and interviewed 696 stylists to understand their habits, needs and challenges. Here’s what they found:

• Stylists typically see 4-16 clients each day
• Stylists spend an average of 30–60 minutes styling each client
• Stylists adjust their angle/arm up to 30 times during just one styling session
• Strain-related injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome are common across the stylist community

These stats informed the creation of Supersonic r™, here’s how it’s different than any other blowdryer:

• Ultra Lightweight: It weighs just 325 grams, less than the weight of a bottle of hairspray.
• Revolutionary shape: The shape allows professionals to comfortably and with control, dry and style hard-to-reach sections of hair.
• Streamlined airflow: Dyson’s curved heater is made of symmetrical copper foils to deliver high-pressure air more evenly, without uneven bursts of hot air—ultimately eliminating excess heat damage.

• Precise heat & air settings: The dryer is designed with three precise airflow settings and four heat modes, including constant cold shot. The controls and LED indicators are both on the handle all within a thumb’s reach so stylists can adjust without interrupting the styling session. 

Here’s how the dryer’s groundbreaking technology will shorten time spent behind the chair:

• Intelligent heat controls: The dryer’s internal glass bead thermistor works in tandem with an embedded temperature sensor to measure air temperature over 20 times a second to prevent extreme heat damage, protect natural shine and change the air’s temperature faster than any other dryer on the market.

• Sensor-controlled attachments: The Supersonic r™ has five attachments that each feature integrated Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) sensors. Each sensor communicates with the dryer to automatically adjust the motor and heater to deliver optimal airflow and temperature to cater to different hair types and styles.
  • For example: The diffuser is set to low flow and low temperature to reduce frizz and enhance curls without disrupting the curl pattern. The rough dry mode uses max power heat and flow to minimize dry time.
