Curl maintenance is not one-size-fits-all. Founder of the Rëzo Cut, salon owner and global educator Nubia Rëzo (@nubiarezo) explains that a client’s maintenance depends on their texture, density and shape goals below.

“I get asked all the time: How often should I come in for the haircut?” Nubia shares in her BTC University class.
Her general guideline starts with loose textures. “If you have a loose texture, I will see you every three to four months,” Nubia says.
For tighter curls with strong volume, Nubia recommends spacing appointments a little farther apart. “If you have tighter curls with good volume, I will see you every four to five months,” Nubia says. “Because again, you don’t want to lose that amazing volume that you enjoy.”
For clients wearing Afros, Nubia recommends an even longer maintenance window. “For my beautiful Afros, twice a year,” Nubia says. “Twice a year is the perfect way to keep growing your hair beautiful and, at the same time, make sure it is healthy.”
Nubia compares curl maintenance to caring for flowers: The hair still needs pruning, but not every curl type needs to be trimmed on the same schedule.
“I relate curls to flowers,” Nubia says. “You will never have a beautiful garden if you don’t trim them every season or every so often. So, beautiful curls are going to need that pruning, but depending on what type of flowers we are working with, we’re going to do it more often or less often.”
Nubia also explains the difference between a full haircut and a maintenance trim. When a client comes back after a few months, the goal may not be to remove a lot of hair; it may be to refresh the shape.
“The expertise of a textured hair expert is to know that you are just reshaping the hair, maintaining the length but building the volume through the ‘Rëzo’ rose technique,” Nubia says. “The rose is the elevation they need and that they’re losing as the months go by. At this point, we’re not going to see a lot of hair on the floor. We’re just barely going to see dusting.”
